Bodywork with Psychotic Patients

Those of you who have been following the World Bulletin the last few years know that Bruno and Jack have been involved in project to bring bodywork into the field of psychiatry. In a recent volume published in Italy, Terapie Integrate in Psichiatria (Gianfranco Buffardi), Bruno presents „Per un Intervento di Integrazione Posturale in Psichiatria: Materiali Metodologico-Clinico" in which he includes ideas and materials from Dirk Marivoet and Jack. He gives a model based on several themes: 1) a neuro-biological model of bodymind as used in P.I., 2) the psycho-sensory-motor system in relation to the therapist and client, 3) the triple brain model (three brains, one body) in treating the psychotic. In working with patients he outlines a process with interlocking steps which help bring the patient to their personal identity: „Sperimentazione - Gesto - Postura - Struttura - Evento - Tendenza - Abitudine - Identita Personale”.

For more information in Italian contact: brunovalente@libero.it.

In November and December Bruno invited Jack to the Caserta Pschiatric Hospital to give a workshop for the staff of the hospital. The participants learned some basic breath and touch methods. But what became all important was the staff realizing how they bring their own body problems to their „crazy” patients. Through bodywork-psychodrama they worked with how their own bodies are not so different from those of their psychotic patients and how awareness of their own body-mind builds a bridge to the patients.

New Diplomas in Pelvic-Heart Integration

As Jack has given Pelvic-Heart Integration workshops, in Mill Valley, Belgium and Italy he has been helped by excellent assistants. They have worked with the groups and individuals and deepened their knowledge of the basic principles of PH-I during these last few years. Jack is about to begin the training of PH-I practitioners, but these assistants have already
completed the requirements. Certification goes to: Taj Anapol (California), Dirk Marivoet and Ioanna Gkizas (Ghent), Carmine Piroli (Rome) and Margot Wieser (Vienna).

New Training of Practitioners in Pelvic-Heart Integration in Marin County California

Taj Anapol who has here own network-- taj@lovewithoutlimits.com -- has been very effective in organizing and supporting Jack's workshops in Pelvic-Heart Integration in Marina County. There have been almost three years of busy and exciting introductory and advanced workshops. Now Jack and Taj are planning a program for becoming a practitioner of P-HI. Thos who have had introductory and advanced work can enter into the study of how to give sessions to clients. The program will include not only new themes, but will also give participants a chance to assistant in introductory workshops.

New P.I. Graduates from South Africa

Under the guidance of Martyne Viens and Beverly Wilkinson two students, Leonie Mare and Hammelore Kunze, have completed their P.I. requirements and are beginning their practices in Pretoria and Johannesberg. Stephne Cohen was assistant. This was Martyne's first training as a P.I. Trainer -- she entered into a high energy and passion filled group. In the last eight years Beverly has, with great enthusiasm, spread the message about P.I. throughout South Africa and is well on her way to becoming a PI Trainer, herself. Hats off to both the ladies for making this training happen in a country filled with uncertainty but great hope.

Infra-Red Healing for the Nervous System
Jack

About 15 years ago I had an attack on my nervous system, some strange paralyzing neuropathy from which I quickly recovered. However in the last five years a numbness has been returning to my toes and feet. Earlier this year the numbness and immobility became more severe.

As I went from nuerologist to neurologists, the verdict was always the same: we don't have any treatment. But in the spring I learned of the Bales Photonic Stimulator, an infra red device, for treatment of pain and swelling. But this machine does more, it somehow encourages an improved synaptic functioning. I found a former student of mine (twenty years earlier), Marc Weil, who now is an advanced Rolfer working in San Francisco and who uses this device. His initial treatments to me gave amazing results. I recovered mobility in legs, feet and toes and some return of sensation. www.balesscientific.com

Now I have my own machine and besides working on myself, regularly, I’ve helped friends with all kinds of aches and pains. I see this infra red treatment supplementing bodywork. If the tissues can’t respond fully, our deep tissue work is less effective, but if the nervous action is improved there is also improved circulation to the tissues and more complete re-organization of the tissues as we soften them.

ICPIT Report
from Jack

In September of 2002 the Council met at an old Flemish inn near theMakkegem Forest of Merelbeke (outside Ghent). We -- Marco Guidon, Dirk Marivoet, Niall O’Siochain, Jack Painter, Marie-Louise Simich and Silke Ziehl -- were in the countryside next to sheep, dogs, ponies, and green corn.
The beer at the inn was dark, strong and very good. Bruno Valente, who had planned to attend, had to cancel at the last minute due to the illness of one of his children. Several other paid members -- Achim Eckert, Anton Eckert, Martyne Painter, Claude Vaux and Donald VanHowten -- were unable to attend.
Before drawing up an agenda we each talked about what was happening in our respective countries.

Dirk has been busy with his family, with individual sessions, weekly groups,
some weekends and second year PI students of bodywork in Bodymind in Holland,
as well as with his own P.I. training which Jack visited. He is planning a new format
which as in some other countries includes Energetic Integration. He longs for more
time to write articles and to connect with other countries. Be sure to visit his
website: www.bodymindintegration.com.

Marco has met many obstacles the past couple of years -- the break up
of the Swiss PI Association (Swiss German), the unviability of his and Doris'
castle in Italy, and the absence of a PI training group. Yet he and Doris
thoroughly enjoyed writing, Postural Integration, Harmonie von Koerper, Geist and Seele, ISBN 3-431-04008-X, Verlagsgruppe Luebbe GmbH & Co. www.ehrenwirth.de ( see the review in this issue). Also he has had positive contacts with EABP which asked him to write about body psychotherapy.
He reports that Sepp, a member of ICPIT, is still active in PI in Switzerland.

Silke has enjoyed not being rushed, but is now ready again to jet-set between trainings in England and Germany. In the format which she and her co-trainer Niall use, students get a one year ‘Foundation in Reichian bodywork’ in the first year, then go on to specialize in either Energetic Integration or Postural Integration. There are 20 students in the PI specialization in England, and 12 in the PI specialization in Germany. Doing an intensive year of Reichian work first prepares the students much better to get into the deep tissue work with a whole person perspective.

Niall wants to make clear that his focus is on bodywork but he wants also to emphasize that herbs and nutrition are an indispensable prerequisite for effective bodywork. In his work as co-trainer with Silke he sees thorough supervision of the third and fourth year students as very important. This ties into his belief that our reptilian brain exerts such a strong influence on our lives that the students, in fact, all of us, need lots of help to apply the learning to our everyday lives. Niall also reports that Rosa Maria in Mexico is as busy as ever with PI and EI and is inviting us all to Mexico for the next meeting.

Marie-Louise has been recovering from cancer of the bladder and is now much better. For a while her recovery through radiation treatments required her to go easy in trainings and private practice. But now she is enjoying the training in Toronto with her assistant Graig Stott. She has felt herself an integral part of the training and has worked on herself. She’s happy to be back with her fellow trainers at the Council.

Jack is now living in Gallese, a fortified medieval mountain village, north of Rome, Italy. He continues with work in PI and EI in the U.S. and Europe, but there has been a remarkable growth in the demand for Pelvic-Heart Integration. In the U.S. Taj Anapol, through her network, has organized introductory and advanced P-HI and will help in the near future organize a training for P-HI practitioners. In Europe Pelvic-Heart work has continued with Dirk in Belgium, in Italy with Carmine Piroli, in France with Jacques Schima at Trimurti and now in Austria with Elisabeth Renner. Advanced EI work continues in Holland through Rashma and Elly Hohe. The past year Anton Eckert, who is becoming an EI Trainer, set up with Jack the first steps in an EI training in Germany. Bruno Valente and Jack have continued their work to bring bodywork into the field of psychiatry for psychotic patients (see enclosed article) by giving a workshop in the psychiatric hospital in Caserta, Italy. They hope to establish a training for the staff in several hospitals.

Agenda

(ICPIT Report Continued)

We drew up an agenda which included: 1) cataloguing of all the past ICPIT information: guidelines, procedures, etc.; 2) ICPIT webpage; 3) glossary; 4) report of officers. Most of our energy during these days went to reviewing and editing all the past information. Silke dutifully and with great discipline entered all of our revisions in her computer and gave us pages on which to make corrections. All this information will be on the website we plan for ICPIT (separte from the ICPIT section on the International Center’s website). There are a total of more than 23 pages covering the following:

1. Articles of Association of ICPIT
2. Guidelines for the Training of PI Practitioners
3. The Training of Helpers, Assistants and Trainers
4. Agreement for Students
5. Student Application for Certification as PI Practitioner Form
6. Trainer Agreement Form
7. Trainer Candidate Demonstration Form
8. Code of Ethics
9. Complaint Procedure

We agreed that all Trainers should carefully read all this material into which we have put a great deal of effort. Realizing the need for this material to be available not only in English, Marco volunteered to investigate the possibility of translation into German, French, and Italian.
After three days of thorough work in reviewing this information we
dealt briefly and efficiently with the remaining issues.

Remaining Issues
(ICPIT Report Continued)

Our Secretary-Treasurer, Dirk, reported 15 paying members (Trainers) of ICPIT for 2001 compared with 14 in 2002. This is from a total of 26 diplomed Trainers, but many are inactive or retired. It was decided that the newsletter would be available on line, which
would give us a considerable saving in printing and mailing costs. The challenge is to let people know that it is available on the web. Jack will be sending one page publicity sheets (informing people of the World Bulleting on Line) to trainers and others for hand distribution. Dirk agreed to set up a website specifically for ICPIT where all the collated information and the newsletter could be posted.
Silke has established a chat room icpit@yahoogroups.com where all PI people are welcome to voice their opinions and needs. See article, „Silke's Chat Room.”
It was agreed that the glossary of PI terms could be built from a chain letter to be sent to every trainer.
We set our ICPIT meeting for next year on Oct. 23-26, 2002 at Jack's place in Gallese Italy. We also accepted Rosa Maria Sevilla's invitation to meet in Mexico in 2003.
We acknowledged the tremendous job Silke has done, noting that this frees us for future meetings with less organizational work and more sharing of our ways of doing bodywork.

Postural Integration,
Harmonie von Koerper, Geist and Seele,

Doris and Marco Guidon
ISBN 3-431-04008-X, Verlagsgruppe Luebbe GmbH & Co. www.ehrenwirth.de

This beautiful paperback is filled with color pictures, images and charts. Doris and Marco cover Postural Integration as part of modern body therapy and body psychotherapy. In the context of the four elements they talk about fascia, breathwork, the therapuetic process and character structure. A beautiful edition! Here's the German summary: "Zivilisationsprobleme zeigen sich immer haeufiger auch koerperlich.

Marco is a PI Trainer. Doris is a PI practitioner. They have their practice and trainings in Herrliberg on Zurich Sea.

Wecome Back Claude

Claude Vaux, who was one of our earliest P.I. trainers has rejoined ICPIT. He and Eliane Jung, his partner, are directors of the School of Creative Communication in Strasbourg, wish to help P.I. become recognized in Europe as a body psychocorpal method. They are key officers in EAP, European Association of Psychotherapy. PI and EI trainers and students who so elect can, if the project is successful, recieve the European Certificate of Psychotherapy. Let's give Claude and Eliane all the help we can.

Silke's Chat Room

Our Council President, Silke Ziehl, made a proposal at our Council meeting and has immediatly carried through with it (Silke’s efficient style). She has opened a chat room, ICPIT@Yahoogroups.com, with this comment, "we invite you to join the ICPIT information exchange group by sending an email to ICPIT-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Once you have joined, you can post information to all the members of this group simultaneously by emailing it to ICPIT@Yahoogroups.com. To make it safer and virus free, please always mail information in plain text only in the email, with no attachments and no HTML. We hope this group will become a lively exhcange for all of us! If you later want to unsubscribe, simply mail to ICPIT-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com and you will be taken off the group mailings.
